Roof Repair

Shingle roof repair for San Jose composition roofs

Most composition roofs have years left when a few shingles blow off or a ridge cap cracks. Matched shingles, correct nailing and sealed tabs make the repair last as long as the roof around it.

  • Composition shingle
  • Flat, torch-down and TPO

Quick answer. Shingle roof repair in San Jose replaces missing, torn or creased shingles with matching ones, reseats nail pops, re-seals lifted tabs and rebuilds cracked ridge caps, working the new shingles in under the courses above so they are nailed and lapped like the originals. Most repairs are finished in one visit.

The job

When a shingle roof needs repair and when it needs more

A roof with a few missing shingles, a cracked ridge cap or a handful of nail pops is a repair. A roof where shingles crack when lifted, granules cover the gutters and the tabs curl everywhere is at the end of its life, and patching it repeatedly costs more than it saves.

We tell you which one you have, with photos, before any work starts.

Missing and torn shingles

Missing shingles on a San Jose roof

Wind takes shingles from the edges, ridges and places where the seal strip never bonded. We break the seal on the shingles above, remove the damaged pieces and nails, slip in new shingles matched as closely as current production allows, and nail them through the correct zone under the course above. Seal strips are activated or hand-sealed so the new shingles hold down in the next wind, and the underlayment beneath is checked before it is covered. Loose granules on the patch are brushed off before we leave.

Granule loss and curling

Curling shingles with granule loss

Granules shield the asphalt from the sun; when they wash off, the shingle dries, curls and cracks. A few damaged shingles in a high-wear spot, like below a downspout from an upper roof, are replaced. Widespread curling and bare spots across a slope mean the roof is near the end of its life, and repairs there are a bridge to replacement rather than a fix, which we point out plainly with photos. Granules in the gutters after a new roof's first year are normal; heavy loss on an older roof is not.

Nail pops and exposed fasteners

Nail pop lifting a shingle

Nails back out as the deck expands and shrinks, lifting the shingle above and eventually tearing it. We pull popped nails, fill the old holes, and renail beside them into solid deck, sealing the new heads under the tab. Exposed nails on flashing and ridge caps get the same treatment. A roof with many pops often has a deck or ventilation problem underneath, which we look for in the attic. Pops that keep returning in one area usually trace to overdriven or short nails from the original install.

Ridge cap repair

Ridge caps are bent over the peak and take the most sun and wind of any shingle on the roof, so they crack first. We replace cracked caps with matching cap shingles, not cut three-tab pieces, which crack again, and nail them with longer fasteners through the vent or deck. Where a ridge vent sits under the caps, we check its baffles at the same time. Caps are matched to the field shingle line so the ridge looks continuous from the street.

What we see on San Jose roofs

Since January 1, 2026, re-roofs in mapped Fire Hazard Severity Zones, including High zones inside San Jose city limits, need a Class A assembly under the state's new wildfire code, so a shingle repair in those areas should keep the roof's rating intact rather than mixing in lower-rated material. In historic districts, the city also expects roofing to match the original color and texture, and we match repairs with that in mind.

  • Matching Discontinued colors need sourcing.
  • Underlayment Torn paper under missing shingles is replaced.
  • Ridge work Cap shingles and vent baffles.
