Santa Cruz County is over the hill from the San Jose office, and its roofs face two very different problems: wildfire in the mountains and damp, salty air on the coast.

What we treat
Quick answer. Roof Doctor covers Santa Cruz County from the San Jose service office: Scotts Valley, the San Lorenzo Valley (Felton, Ben Lomond, Boulder Creek), Santa Cruz, Capitola, Soquel, Aptos and Watsonville. Mountain re-roofs get Class A assemblies and ember-resistant vents; coastal roofs get corrosion-resistant fasteners and flashing.
Santa Cruz County
The 2020 CZU Lightning Complex destroyed 911 homes in Santa Cruz County, most of them in the San Lorenzo Valley and on the North Coast, and burned more than 85,000 acres across Santa Cruz and San Mateo counties. Rebuilding permits after the fire have required a geologic hazard evaluation through the county's Recovery Permit Center, so rebuild roofs are part of a longer approval process than an ordinary re-roof.
For existing homes in the mountains, the lesson is the same one the rest of the state has learned: Class A roof assemblies, ember-resistant vents, metal gutter guards and clear roofs and gutters before fire season. We specify all of it on mountain re-roofs and can bring an existing roof closer to that standard without replacing it.
Santa Cruz County
Under the redwoods and oaks of the Santa Cruz Mountains, roofs collect needles and duff in the valleys and gutters, stay shaded and damp, and grow moss. Debris-packed valleys are one of the most common leak causes we find there. Regular gutter and valley clearing and a gentle soft wash do more for a mountain roof than almost anything else.
Santa Cruz County
From Santa Cruz to Aptos, marine air corrodes plain steel fasteners, drip edges and flashing, and wind-driven rain finds weak laps. On coastal re-roofs we use corrosion-resistant fasteners and metals and pay extra attention to the windward edges.
