Gutters, Skylights & Exteriors

Gutter repair for San Jose homes

A gutter that leaks or overflows puts water exactly where a house least wants it: against the fascia, the siding and the foundation. Most gutter problems are repairable in an afternoon.

What we treat

  • Concrete and clay tile
  • Composition shingle
  • Flat, torch-down and TPO
  • Spray foam
  • Standing seam metal

Quick answer. Gutter repair in San Jose fixes sagging runs by rehanging them on new hidden hangers with the right fall, reseals leaking seams and end caps, reconnects separated downspouts, and adds diverters or larger outlets where corners overflow. Most repairs take a few hours; rotted fascia behind the gutter is replaced first when found.

The job

Why gutters fail and what the repair involves

Gutters sag because hangers loosen in the fascia, the fascia rots, or the gutter has carried years of wet debris. They leak at seams and end caps where sealant dries out, and they overflow where the fall runs the wrong way or an outlet is too small for the roof above it.

We fix the cause each time. A new bead of sealant on a gutter pitched backward still overflows.

Sagging and pulled-away gutters

Sagging gutter on a San Jose home

Old spike-and-ferrule hangers work loose as the wood around them softens. We replace them with hidden hangers screwed into the fascia every two feet or so, and reset the run to a steady fall toward the downspout. If the fascia behind is soft, it is replaced before the gutter goes back up, because new hangers in rotted wood pull out again within a season. Bent sections are replaced rather than straightened, and the fall is checked with a level along the whole run, not by eye.

Leaking seams and end caps

Leaking gutter seam

Seams on sectional gutters and the end caps on every gutter rely on sealant that dries and cracks in the sun. We clean the joint back to bare metal, reseal it with gutter sealant from the inside, and rivet any joint that has separated. When a sectional system leaks at every seam, a replacement with seamless gutters is usually cheaper over a few years, and we price both so you can compare. Split end caps are replaced rather than sealed over, since sealant will not bridge a crack for long.

Downspout reconnection

Disconnected downspout at a San Jose foundation

Downspouts get knocked loose by mowers, ladders and wind, and a disconnected one dumps a whole roof's worth of water against the foundation. We reconnect and strap them to the wall, replace crushed elbows, and add extensions or splash blocks that carry water at least a few feet from the house. Where a downspout feeds a buried drain, we check that the drain is actually taking the water. Downspouts that dump onto a walkway are rerouted where the layout allows.

Overflow at inside corners

Where two roof slopes meet, a valley pours water into the gutter faster than a straight run, and it shoots straight over the front at the corner. We add a valley splash guard at the corner, check that the nearest outlet is big enough, and add a second downspout or a larger outlet when the run is too long for one. The fix is usually small once the reason is clear. On long runs, a mid-span outlet often solves overflow at both ends.

What we see on San Jose roofs

With roofing labor in San Jose running around $94 an hour, well above the national average, the repair-or-replace math on gutters comes out differently than in cheaper markets. A single sagging run is always worth rehanging. A sectional system leaking at a dozen seams usually is not, because resealing each one takes nearly as much labor as installing new seamless gutter, which is why we price both whenever the seams are the problem.
